Questions For Twelfth Night

Why did the duke send "Viola" to talk to Olivia?

Why does the duke trust and bond with "Viola" so quickly?

Why will Olivia "not match above her degree, neither in estate, years, or wit"?

Why would Olivias uncle want her to marry Sir Andrew if he seems so obnoxious?

What is the deal with the Clown, he's wacked?

Why is Olivia so taken with Cesario?

  1. 1. The duke sent "Viola" to talk to Olivia so that "Viola" can give Olivia messages that the duke loves her.
    4. Olivia's uncle Toby wants her to marry Sir Andrew because Toby and Andrew are very much alike. They are both dopey and drunkards, so they get along. In Toby's eyes, Andrew is fine.

  2. 1. The Duke sent "Viola" to talk to Olivia so that she could confess the Duke's love for her. He felt that if he sent "Viola" Olivia would be more likely to fall for him since "Viola" is younger and would be more appealing to Olivia than Orsino would be.

  3. 6. Olivia is so taken with Cesario because of the speech and because Cesario comes off as gentle because she is really a girl.

  4. 3. Olivia won't marry above her estate or anything because she now runs it by herself without her brother, and she loves it. On page 9 lines 26-34 Valentine passes on the message the she will morn the death of her brother for 7 years. It's really because she now has all the power and doesn't want to give it up.

  5. 3. Olivia is in a wonderful position because she has no husband, brother or faather ruling over her. Sheis able to have complete control over herself and her estate. Marrying someone above her would instantly to cause her to give up all of the power and autonomy that she currently posseses.

"then leaving her in the protection of his son, her brother who shortly also died, for whose dear love they say she has objected the sight and company of men...Be aware she will admit no kind of suitor."
